This Sunbeam Rover engine at the Park is what remains of an extremely rare World War One ambulance that saw service in France before coming back to New Zealand.
The ambulance had an interesting history and apparently was used as a mobile picture theatre, a generator for a public hall at Woodstock and then following a fire was last used as a saw bench by the late Frank Keenan who donated the engine to the park.
Almost all of the engine is complete and has the potential for restoration. We have obtained an option to purchase surplus parts from a Sunbeam Rover car being restored in Ashburton and have obtained detailed plans and specifications of the vehicle.
We are looking for support for this project and intend looking for Lotto assistance to restore our ambulance to its former glory.
Images of the only other example of this ambulance that was thought to be the only one remaining in the world.
